Word Walls

Many of us are asked to maintain a word wall in our classrooms. Teachers who are unsure how to manage this may go and buy a pre-made word wall from a store and hang it up. If you have done this you may have noticed that the word wall is not functioning well in your classroom. Use the following links to learn how to utilize a word wall and then visit the book recommendation link to find some titles of books that can assist you. Using a word wall can be very beneficial to students when done correctly. Here are some reasons every classroom K-5 should have a word wall in their classroom.

  • Word Walls provide opportunities for students to practice and meet grade level standards/expectations.

  • Word Walls provide ongoing support for varied language learners.

  • Word Walls are used as a reference for spelling, decoding, and perhaps for vocabulary. Using references is a real-world strategy.

  • Building and using word walls is easy to integrate into your every day literacy activities.
