One way to provide math instruction to your students is by creating math tubs. It is suggested to divide your class into groups with no more than four or five children to a group. You will also want to purchase or gather enough "dishpan" size containers for each group. The container will be filled with activities that reinforce a certain math standard and will rotate between the groups during the week.
If your tables or math groups are named by color words, you can use the following system to keep track of which table the tub will go to for the day. Use the chart below to help you place "garage sale" stickers on the front of each container-the letters represent the color of the sticker (R=Red, O=Orange, Y=Yellow, G=Green, B=Blue) and the order of the stickers represent the day of the week.
Place the following stickers, in this order on the front of the tubs:
tub 1: R O Y G B
tub 2: O Y G B R
tub 3: Y G B R O
tub 4" G B R O Y
tub 5: B R O Y G
On Monday, the tub will go to the table/group color that matches the color of the first sticker. On Tuesday, you will look at the second sticker and take that container to that color table and so on.
Use the links on this page to find some suggested activities to put in each tub. Work together with teachers at your grade leve to come up with new ideas for the math tubs. You may want to walk around with a clipboard for the 10-15 minute time period that children are working in math tubs to check for mastery/reteach certain skills.
